Programs

The MMDTC offers a variety of programs that aim to promote Dakota language and culture, document and preserve Dakota history, and support education and wellbeing of its members. These programs are funded through the 501(c)(3) tribal non-profit run by the community.

Dakota Language Program

The MMDTC offers a four-year course in Dakota language.  This course is currently offered on Zoom and is open to MMDTC members, enrolled members of federally recognized Dakota (and Lakota) tribes, and documented Dakota descendants. Our goal is to help build a core community of Dakota speakers who can continue the work of preserving and reviving the Dakota language.

By funding this course through grants and donations, we are able to offer it for free to interested students.

MMDTC Tribal Library & Archive

The MMDTC maintains a small library of resources on Native American history and the history of the Dakota people. We are also in the process of creating an archive of documents, photographs, videos and other sources relating to the history of Mendota’s Mdewakanton community and, more broadly, the history of Dakota people in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area. Our archive-building and digitization project is funded through grants from the Minnesota Historical Society.

Marie Nordin Scholarship

The MMDTC is working to re-activate the Marie Nordin Scholarship, which used to be awarded to our tribal members who enrolled in higher education. The scholarship is named for Marie Winona Nordin (1912–2009), our late head dancer and a Mendota community elder.
